CHAPTER 3
“YOUR FAIRY DUST nearly killed me this morning,” I said, spearing a piece of bacon and popping it into my mouth.
“Shit. Sorry. I’d forgotten I still had it in my pocket. It’s okay for a little bit, but too much and your body can’t take it.”
“I’d noticed!” I replied. Thanks to Boots, my body felt better than it ever had. My muscles ached slightly but there was a wonderful tingle running through me. Fucking on fairy dust was to be recommended. I was also full of energy, the good kind and I wanted to get back to work and prove I could do it right.
“I’m going to go back to the toy factory once I’ve finished this,” I said, pointing at my eggs.
“Noella is still on the night shift,” Sandal pointed out as he reached across and stole a sausage from my plate.
“I think I can handle her,” I replied with more confidence than I felt. I smiled at him when he raised his eyes adorably at me.
“Forget Noella,” Boots interjected. “I’ve spent all day trying to figure out why Holly is on the naughty list, and I can’t. There just isn’t a way. I know she was on the nice list at the end of October. I saw her. She’s one of the few names I check every year.”
I blinked up at him, my heart swelling and my stomach clenching. “Why?” My voice came out curious, imploring.
“Most names on there don’t matter too much, but yours matters a great deal. You are a Claus. If you turn bad, that means there is something wrong. If you are bad enough to be put on the naughty list, it could be catastrophic for our kind. That’s why I check you every year.”
My wide grin slowly faltered. Ah, that wasn’t necessarily the reason I had wanted to hear. I forced my smile back and said, “Why? What would happen if I turned out to be a bank robber for instance?”
“Then I’d have to send some of my team out to intervene and make sure you make up for it in some way before November first rolls round. That doesn’t matter, anyway. You haven’t done anything bad. The list says so. You are on it because...well, because...well, I don’t know.”
“When you say catastrophic...?”
“Things are already going wrong for you. It’s no coincidence that your life went down the crapper beginning a couple of weeks ago. Things aren’t going to magically get better for you. Things will continue to go wrong until you go back on the nice list.”
“Which won’t happen until January.”
“Exactly. And because everything is going wrong for you, it will affect those of you around us. Things are already going haywire here. The factory is way behind on its quota, Santa’s sick and no one knows why...”
“You know,” said Elijah. “Santa was fine in October...”
We all stared at him.
“Are you saying that Santa is sick because Holly is on the naughty list?”
Eligah sighed. “I don’t know, because this has never happened before.
